Dance Your Way Through the Holiday Season

By Lindsey House, RD LD Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise

Is your fitness routine become a little stale? Now, there’s a new way to refresh your fitness program. You can join the ever-growing crowd of people who have finally found their love of fitness through dancing! This new found love of fitness centers around the idea that your mind and muscles never get bored if your fitness class feels like a dance party!  If you are still stuck on the “dreadmill” and counting down the minutes, these ideas will help you get into a new groove that you can even show off at your holiday parties!

1. Zumba – A salsa-type dance style that provides a fantastic calorie burn

2. Ballroom, Line Dancing, Cultural Dance – pick a genre and get started

3. Video Games - Dance Dance Revolution & Just Dance are some of the most popular video games

4. Pole Dancing – these classes provide incredible upper and lower body strength training

Believe it or not, dancing has incredible aerobic benefits. It provides cardiovascular conditioning which can help lower your risk of coronary heart disease, decrease blood pressure, decrease weight, improve muscle strength (and improve bone density), as well as aid in coordination and balance.

If the usual physical benefits are not fully motivating you to get up and get dancing, then you might love hearing about the psychological benefits! Studies have found that dance can reduce stress and chronic fatigue, improve energy and mood and increase self-esteem as well as confidence!

The old theory of “no pain no gain” is out the window in favor of having fun while you workout! Now it is possible to enjoy your workouts and get excited about exercise. This makes it more likely you will keep fitness in your life forever!
